Character: Asari Ugetsu (Western Order: Ugetsu Asari)
Canon: Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Version: Canon
Canon Point: Post the events that were shown in the Inheritance Arc
Age: Not stated canonically, but appears to be 20-24 physically (is actually hundreds of years old when he shows up in canon).
Gender: Male
History: Here is the Wiki that details a lot of his canon within the Anime, however, I will be pulling him from the additional manga events that are expanded on, as well as some implications based on manga information, which can be found here.
Based on his lack of information, I’ve had to insert some headcanon that I’ve had to fill in based on canon items that are presented. If this is not alright, I do not mind fixing the history section.
Personality:
Ugetsu is first shown as a calm and collected individual, one who seems a little no-nonsense and can be a little cryptic when it comes to what he wants. In the succession arc, he never stated first off what he wanted to do for his trial, thus causing Yamamoto to assume they were fighting (which was partially Yamamoto’s fault, given the emotional state he was in at the time). He doesn’t really say anything definite, but seems to want to support and help people come to understanding on their own, not outright give them the answer (which is what he does with Yamamoto and Tsuna, when Yamamoto is depressed about losing to Daisy). Additionally, it doesn’t seem like Ugetsu really expresses his true feelings on particular subjects, but rather adopts a more neutral stance to problems as to continue to mediate his own, as well as others, emotions.
Despite his sometimes-serious demeanor, Ugetsu can be incredibly kind. G often states that he is “too soft”, given that he gives Yamamoto another chance at his succession trial. Not only that, but Ugetsu gives up so much just for Giotto, who is a very dear friend to him, just by selling his beloved flute and leaving his home to help. Additionally, based on the transcript of the CD drama, it seems Ugetsu is very motherly and gentle towards the other family members by giving them tea, often fussing at G for picking on Lampo (which in the drama CD scenario, G gets agitated with that and calls him soft here too) and generally mediating when everyone is arguing. Additionally, Ugetsu is fairly cheerful and laid back, which is often compared to Yamamoto, who is the same. He tends to take things a little more seriously then Yamamoto, but that may be more chalked up to age and generational differences. Ugetsu is, however, a fairly calm and cheerful person who can express an immense amount of kindness for others, to the point of being soft.
He can also be very quick witted and intelligent when it comes to certain aspects. This also leads into Ugetsu’s ability to sense things that others really don’t see, which is why he’s often able to mediate and calm down fighting without actually having to use his swords. However, when it does come to fighting, Ugetsu is fast to come up with new techniques and grasp the abilities of his enemies, ensuring himself a victory without much effort, as he is able to not only spot weaknesses quickly, but able to figure out exactly out to maximize his own potential without using those weaknesses.
Lastly, Ugetsu isn’t exactly always prone to being calm. There are situations, although they are rare, that he can get frustrated. Generally, he stays very patient, which in a family with someone as quick tempered as G and as stubborn as Giotto, it’s best to be. He can get angry, just like Yamamoto, but it’s more controlled anger and is abated very quickly. It’s not something that he holds onto either, but he can be quite scary when he focuses the anger in battle, because it can fuel his attacks and make him a powerful force.
In essence, Ugetsu is a simple, kind man who tends to be a calming force in whatever group he may be in, embodying his role as the Rain Attribute guardian, which is said to wash away all adversity.
Fears: Ugetsu often masks his true intentions and feelings, so it’s hard to tell what scares him. Primarily, being unable to protect his family and friends is one of his big fears, but also disappointing those same people because he doesn’t perform well enough. Additionally, based on his denial of the sword (and by proxy, fighting/killing) in his culture and taking up music, it’s possible Ugetsu also fears being tied down or controlled, as well as kept in a tight space.
Weaknesses: Ugetsu, doesn’t have many weaknesses to speak of, but the most prominent one is his softness. While very wise and easy to pick up on tricks, he can be very soft to the point of a serious weakness. This would end up causing a lot of trouble, as he is very likely to give another chance to someone who doesn’t deserve it or doesn’t need a second chance. It opens him up for a lot of hurt and possibly hurting his friends and family because of it. Ugetsu is also prone to letting himself lose because of this softness, mostly because he’s either trying to teach a lesson, or trying to be way too nice.
Also, Ugetsu has a serious weakness for animals. In the drama CD, despite being worried about Giotto’s safety, he was going on about how cute the animals they found were, and so it’s assumed he has a problem with animals.
Mundane Strengths/Abilities: Ugetsu’s true abilities are actually never shown in canon, however, in the succession arc fight with Yamamoto, he uses a range of made up abilities that are listed below. In the series, it’s stated he had no equal in his era because he was so gifted as a swordsman.
Four Irregular Swords: Ugetsu’s abilities start off with his use of four swords. In his right hand, he holds the abnormally long blade and in the left he holds the three short swords between his fingers. These are the weapons he replaced his flute with when he helped the Vongola.
Hisame: This ability uses harden rain flames to project shards of ice at his enemy.
Kuzuryu Kawakuzure: Basically, using rain flames, he launches a large dragon at his enemy. Fon states that this is named after a nine-headed dragon because of it’s quick and swift pace, as well as it’s current. (During the fight with Yamamoto, he exposes his back during this move, but that was all to test Yamamoto’s resolve.)
Taki No Mai: This attack is more defensive then offensive. Using rain flames, he engulfs his person and makes more mirror images of himself to confuse his opponent.
Again, all the above abilities Ugetsu explicitly states that he made them up during Yamamoto’s trial. It is stated a few times in canon that Yamamoto’s abilities are similar to that of Ugetsu’s, but as for a direct, known set of abilities, they are never officially stated.
Sensitivity/Magical Ability: Ugetsu, using his rain flames, is able to sense illusions and see through them, as well as slow someone’s abilities down as well. It’s so subtle that people sometimes don’t even notice it’s happening until it’s already been done. In regards to seeing ghosts and the like, his rain abilities probably do not extend that far, but he is very observant of the area around him, so it’s likely he’d be able to pick up some kind of disturbance, even if he didn’t know what it was.
Supply List:
Four Irregular Swords: These consist of three small swords/daggers (they look more like daggers, but are called “short swords”) and one long sword (it’s abnormally long compared to a regular katana).
Rain Guardian Ring: This will be the original ring of the rain guardian, which is the form it takes at the end of the TYL arc, right before Tsuna beats byakuran.
Shakuhachi: This is his flute, which is a traditional Japanese shakuhachi, which it is assume he obtained again after going to Italy, as he is seen playing in at various scenes.
Golden Pocket Watch: This pocket watch is a gift from Giotto; a symbol of the friendship he shares with his boss as well as the other guardians. Upon opening it, a small rain flame appears in the middle. The cover of the watch has the symbol of the Vongola Family on the front.
Clothes: This will include his clothes that he often wears from home, the Heian Era style clothes, and his hat.
Game Transfers: None!
Sample RP post:
Ugetsu sat down, looking at the room that he had decided to take up. Looking around, it wasn’t something he was entirely used to, but then again, he never was used to Western Styles. Sighing, he leaned back on his hands, wondering what he should do. He was in a world he didn’t know, and probably going to be stuck here for a while. Things also didn’t look like (or sound like based on his conversation with G) went well around here. It was probably a situation he was going to have to fight to protect those around him again, and while he wasn’t completely opposed to doing that, he was a little tired having finally gained peace in his life.
Slowly, Ugetsu’s hand found his flute, and he picked it up. It was calming to know that his things came with him, especially this. Sitting up a little straighter, he played a few notes quietly before going out into a song. The music, while still soft, was powerful and slow, lifting his confused spirit up to something more manageable. It helped him to think about what he needed to do. Once he became focused, he made a plan. Talk to G about the area, what in the world had gone on in this place that he needed to know about…what technology would he have to learn and, lastly, how could they ensure Giotto’s safety. Ugetsu was positive that the other had thought of all these things, it was just a matter of getting on the same page.
Pulling his lips back from the instrument, he smiled gently, putting it down. Even if he was in a different world, there was nothing like being able to play his music and help his family. That was the only thing he needed to be concerned about.
