ugetsu: (surprise?)
[personal profile] ugetsu

In regards to Ugetsu’s past, it is stated that he left Japan after selling his most prized possession, his flute. After he made it to Italy it’s surmised that he spent a lot of his time with the Vongola and helping them out as a growing family. However, within the Manga, Ugetsu’s role as the rain guardian is utilized to protect Giotto’s allied family, The Shimon, from danger. He doesn’t speak much, but he is shown fighting in a battle that he would rather avoid. Additionally, he would be aware of the problems with Spade, even though he doesn’t seem to shed his own opinion on the situation and problems that Spade had caused for the Vongola in the pursuit of “making the Vongola stronger”

Regarding some things that have also been implied: Ugetsu was never fully caught by Spade. The reasons for this is that within the “Inheritance Arc” (also known as the “Shimon Arc” and not to be confused with the “Succession Arc” in the Anime). Spade seemed to be out to destroy the Vongola as it was after the death of his lover, Elena. However, in the current family, Yamamoto is the first one attacked and seriously hurt. At first it seemed like the random attack by a boy who was nervous about getting caught, but it’s later stated by Spade himself that he wanted Yamamoto out of the way.

The reason is that rain flame users have a significant ability: that is they can see not only through illusions, but significantly slow down the movements of their enemies using the calming attribute of the rain flame. Not only that, but Yamamoto and Ugetsu both are very good at coming up with sword styles on the spot, meaning they have the ability to never show their enemies their attacks more then once. This element of surprise, topped with the ability to actually slow him down, was a huge hinderance to Spade, which is also probably why Ugetsu’s and Giotto (implying that Ugetsu protected Giotto while he was in Japan) family line continued to Tsuna’s (the current) generation.

As for what happened after these events, it is unsaid, but the dojo that Yamamoto’s family uses (or possibly owns), it is owned by “Asarigumi” which translates to Asari clan. This implies that Ugetsu did indeed move back to Japan, and prospered actually. This was likely when Giotto moved to Japan to start a family, Ugetsu moved with him in an attempt to live out the rest of his life in peace after helping out the Vongola. Whether this means that Ugetsu and Yamamoto are related, it doesn’t say, but they do look alike in appearance and have the same mannerisms.

Back further then all this, is before Ugetsu met Giotto. Just by the manner in which he dresses and speaks is enough to tell the kind of life he lived in Japan, even if it’s never explicitly stated. Just the hat he wears is one that is worn by nobles and people who are able to enter Lord’s chambers. Given that he played music and was gifted at it, it’s likely that Ugetsu played for many different lords and ladies, thus giving him his status. However, it’s not really implied what happened to Ugetsu before that, just that he was a Japanese flute player who was very passionate about his music, like Yamamoto is passionate about his baseball. As stated in the Wiki, his clothes possibly mean he is from the Heian Era, as that’s where they are dated from.
Based on this understanding of his mannerisms and dress, Ugetsu probably was a noble from birth. He lived in a healthy home, alongside his mother and father, his father being the one who taught him swordsmanship. However, Ugetsu enjoyed music and made it his life, playing for many people, which is likely how he met Giotto and became friends with him. From writing letters to the other, that’s how he found out about the trouble Giotto was in (which was likely when he was starting up the Vongola and all the problems they encountered), thus selling his flute to obtain swords. It’s likely that while being a noble in status, Ugetsu probably didn’t have a lot of money to himself while he was working on his music (coming from a family that his father was likely wanting him to be a samurai or something of the like).

Other then that, Ugetsu probably led a less then glamorous life after he got back from Italy, given that he was protecting Giotto from Spade’s possible onslaught. Given that Ugetsu was/is a simple man, it was likely he started up the dojo that the Yamamoto’s currently go to, or took it over from his father. Being from a traditional family, he probably felt obligated to do that, and passed it down. The ever changing sword style that Yamamoto uses is likely to have come from Ugetsu as well, given his penchant for coming up with abilities on the spot and that there are about seven or eight generations apart from Primo to Decimo families (depending on how you look at the family tree of Tsuna’s family, given that Giotto is his grandfather many greats over). At the time that Yamamoto Takeshi learns the Shigure Souen Ryu, it has had 8 forms, Yamamoto Tsuyoshi (his father), being the one to come up with his version of the 8th form (the other person who learned with him came up with their own version as well). This pretty much states that from the beginning of it’s creation and its continuity of being passed down, it’s gone though about 7 to 8 generations by the time Yamamoto learns it.

This is all based on what we know from current canon, not necessarily the truth of Ugetsu’s history. Nothing is stated outright about his life before and after the Vongola, but primarily implied through subtle hints in the manga that surround Yamamoto’s life.
